Humla District is one of the most remote districts in Nepal situated in the Northwestern corner, straddling 30°N latitude and lying between 81° and 82° longitude. High Himalayan district of Nepal is considered as the most isolated regions in Nepal, reachable only by foot or on the small aircrafts - ‘Twin Otter’ or ‘Chopper’, which is irregularly landing in the district headquarter- Simikot (elevation 2910 metres). Humla is bordered with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and Mugu in the east; Bajura and Mugu in South and Bajhang and Darchula in the west and in the North with the the Tibet. Simikot is the gateway to holy Mt. Kailash and Lake Manosarober trek, which takes about 3-5 days walk until the Tibetan border. It is extended in an area of 5,655km˛ and has a population of more than 56,000, with very low population density, which is a < 10 person per square kilometer. The district is not connected yet with the national road networks and lacks roads altogether. The indicators of development are correspondingly low: only one hospital in Simikot for the whole district, and there are few under-equipped health posts. Literacy rates are among the lowest in the country: 33.5% for males and 4.8% for females (CBS 2001). More>>> |
